Billy Strings & Don Julin
Billy Strings & Don Julin 10/17/15
Their live shows are mesmerizing, with Strings and Julin goading each other into more intense riffs and improvised breaks, pushing harder onto new levels of musicianship, but never straying from mastery of their instruments or their art. Julin, a colleague and friend of Caramoor favorite David Grisman, is known for his wide versatility, powerful picking technique, and remarkable creativity. Strings, a tattooed 22 year old guitarist, has the voice of an old soul, the air of a gentleman, and blazing super-human picking abilities. You will leave this evening newly energized and buzzing!
St. Lawrence Quartet 10/24/15
Known for their impassioned performances, operatic lyricism, and bold risk-taking, the St. Lawrence String Quartet has built a glittering reputation throughout its quarter-century of performing. Champions of new works by composers such as John Adams, Osvaldo Golijov, Ezequiel Vinao, and Jonathan Berger, as well as masterworks from the classical canon, the St. Lawrence brings informed perspectives to its imaginative music-making, offering delights for all ears.

The Evnin Rising Stars program is a week of intense collaboration and musical discovery where distinguished artist/mentors pass on the great masterworks of the chamber music repertoire to a new generation of outstanding talent. In its 23nd year, Rising Stars features multiple accomplished mentors, including, Kim Kashkashian, viola, Peter Wiley, cello and Pamela Frank, violin – the program’s Artistic Director and Avery Fisher Prize winner. The Rising Stars week culminates in two chamber recitals by the young virtuosos alongside their educators.

Drawing heavily on the gospel tradition, his love for Vince Guaraldi, and his experience as a longtime sideman for jazz legends such as Wynton Marsalis, Chick Corea, and Dizzy Gillespie, Chestnut’s sensitive key strokes have earned him a faithful following. With skillful versatility, playful showmanship, and universal appeal, the Cyrus Chestnut Trio is sure to sweet talk your senses.

Our newest Quartet-in-Residence was introduced to us by way of two of its members, Ayane Kozasa and Karen Ouzounian, alumnae of our Evnin Rising Star program. Formed in 2012, the quartet is currently in residence at the Curtis Institute of Music and served as resident ensemble of the 2014 Ravinia Festival’s Stearns Music Institute. The Aizuri, who derive their name from “aizuri-e”, the Japanese art of indigo woodblock printing, are committed to performing works throughout the string quartet literature, from the great standard works to innovative, experimental and genre-defying pieces. As members of the close-knit Caramoor family, we are thrilled to be welcoming these women (back) to Caramoor!

Holiday Tea Musicale 12/03/15 To 12/17/15
The holidays are a wonderful time to visit Caramoor! The afternoon starts with a docent-led tour of the historic Rosen House, beautifully decorated for the season and reminiscent of holidays past. The tour is followed by a joyful 45-minute concert of holiday music in the majestic Music Room and a special Afternoon Tea. Take in your fill of finger sandwiches, scones, scrumptious holiday treats (including hot chocolate with marshmallows for the little ones!), and a variety of teas to end this festive afternoon in the decked out Summer Dining Room.

Caramoor@Waveny is a unique opportunity to discover exceptional artists in a special setting – the charming 19th-century Carriage Barn at Waveny Park in New Canaan, CT. Formerly home to the Waveny Chamber Music Society (WCMS) for over thirty years, the Carriage Barn offers divine acoustics and intimate seating – a perfect environment for cozy chamber listening – and has hosted programs by past Quartets-in-Residence the Linden Quartet, the Calidore String Quartet, the Dover Quartet, and Caramoor's own Edward Arron and Jeewon Park, among others.
